What Is It?
The Shelter Scholarships Program is an opportunity for members of the public to sponsor Shelter pets while they await adoption into their forever homes. The sponsor may choose to make a one-time gift, or may opt instead for a monthly contribution of a prearranged dollar amount throughout the year, in either case at a level to be determined by the sponsor. Annual renewals of sponsorships will be encouraged.
Why Is It?
OPIN (Outreach to Pets In Need) is an all-volunteer 501(c)(3) non-profit organization dedicated to supporting and advocating for homeless pets. While it was formed primarily to raise funds for and awareness of Stamford’s municipal animal shelter and its impounded pets, nevertheless the organization has grown to include advocacy and financial support for non-shelter animals as well. Allowing a donor to contribute to the financial support of a representative shelter pet will benefit all the homeless animals at the same time that it provides gratification to the donor. This may be especially true in the case of someone who is unable to adopt a pet into his or her own home. In addition, gift sponsorships may be subscribed and dedicated in tribute to, or in memory of, an honored person or beloved pet.
How Does It Work?
A donor is offered the opportunity to make a one-time donation or an ongoing monthly contribution at whatever level he or she chooses. Donations of either kind are tax deductible to the extent allowed by law. The donor may decide whether the sponsored pet will be a Dog or Cat, with the understanding that the representative pet will be chosen by OPIN and will symbolize all pets in residence at Stamford Animal Care and Control. If the pet selected by OPIN subsequently leaves SACC through adoption or other means, the donor’s sponsorship will continue regardless, being applied to either (a) the general operating expenses of the Shelter, (b) the New Shelter fund, (c) Holly’s Fund for extraordinary veterinary expenses, or (d) any other expenses at the discretion of OPIN, the choice among these four applications to be indicated by the donor upon subscription.
If the donor chooses to make monthly contributions, (s)he will be provided with twelve payment coupons as a convenience. The last coupon will contain an option to renew the contributions for an additional twelve months; if selected, twelve more payment coupons will be forwarded. While a donor may terminate his or her participation at any time after the first monthly payment, nevertheless it is hoped that monthly donors will fulfill at least the first twelve-month commitment, and then choose to continue.
In consideration of joining the sponsorship program, each donor may receive from OPIN an 8” by 10” certificate imprinted with a photographic illustration of the representative pet, his or her background story and/or other relevant data, and, if desired, an inscription dedicating the sponsorship either In Honor of or In Memory of an individual or animal designated by the donor, along with the donor’s name.
How Do I Sign Up?
You may complete an application that will ask you for information such as your name, contact data, and to whom an acknowledgment should be sent. It will offer you choices regarding the frequency of your contribution (i.e., one time or monthly), the type of animal you prefer to sponsor, and so forth. You may obtain an application in person at the Shelter or at a Pound Around Town event; or you may download an application from the Shelter’s website (www.cityofstamford.org/animalcontrol) or here OPIN’s website (www.opinpets.org); or you may request an e-mailed file or a hard copy from the volunteer coordinator at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. After completing the application, you should attach either your one-time payment or the first of your monthly payments, whichever applies. Return the form and your check, made payable to OPIN, Inc., to:

After processing your application, we will send the following: > an acknowledgment to you and also, if appropriate, to whomever you designate as the recipient of an honorary or memorial sponsorship; > for a monthly sponsorship, a set of twelve payment coupons for your convenience; > an 8” x 10” certificate, if requested, to you or to your designated recipient.
What If I Change My Mind?
If you select the monthly sponsorship, you may withdraw from the program at any time after the first month. However, as your ongoing support will provide enrichment for Shelter pets and help ensure their care and comfort while they await adoption into their forever homes, however long it may take, we hope you will choose to continue with the Program for the long term.
